Summary
Chapter six opens on Louis, a man from whose perspective the chapter is colored, sitting on his front porch, eating a sandwich and smoking a cigarette. As he sits there he thinks about his family and the ways in which they annoy him. He is pulled from his thoughts when a light blue Cadillac pulls up in his driveway.
The sight of the Cadillac makes him think of his father and his failings. Louis is once again pulled from his thoughts by the car, which he realizes is Joe’s car. He curses, which starts a small argument between his wife and teenaged daughter about her repetition of the curse. Louis does not want Joe in his home. Louis did not even know that Joe knew where he lives.
Despite his fear of Joe’s presence, he waves and greets the large man like...
