Chapters 37 and 38 Summary

In Chapter 37, Kovacs waks Jiang from his compression chamber to tell him they are alive and that Kovacs's old unit came to save them. When Wardani and hand wake from their own bubbles, they start arguing again about the Martian spaceship and the technology the Martians left behind. Tony Loemanako, one of Kovac's former comrades, comes into the room to summon everyone who is awake to a meeting. Before the meeting starts, Hand tries to threaten Carrera and Carrera shoots and kills Hand. Carrera requests a knife and cuts the cortical stack out of Hand's spine. As Kovacs, Wardani, and Sutjiadi and the others look up where Carrera is pointing, millions of the electronic spiders are spilling out and attacking them.

Carrera then reveals it is just Sutjiadi they are after for killing a Wedge officer. Kovacs feigns ignorance.
