Chapters 5 and 6 Summary

In Chapter 5, Kovacs uses a power he has to help bring Tanya Wardani back from her shock of being a detainee at the interment camp. Kovacs and Wardani sit by the fire in the planet where they've landed. Kovacs listens to Wardani talk about her archaeological digs and asks if he is still an Envoy. Kovacs says he's no longer an Envoy. Wardani knows Schneider as Mendel. Schneider joins them by the fire to plan how to dig up the Martian spaceship.

It appears as if Kovacs was kicked out of the Envoys because of a psychiatric problem. The plan to get to the Martian dig site foreshadows a fierce battle with the Protectorate, which is ironic because Kovacs will be fighting against his own men.
