Summary
Chapter 2 (or "Part 2") of the novel alternates in focus between the history of the Dunbar boys’ mothers, Penelope Lesciuszko, as she leaves her communist-ruled European country, and Clay, as he prepares to leave the family home to build a bridge with his father. Penelope, whose mother died giving birth to her, was raised by her father, Waldek Lesciuzsko, in an eastern European country that remains nameless in the novel. He is a quiet but kind father, and encourages her to learn the piano and to read classical literature. Penelope develops in skill as a pianist, and, as she grows older, she is permitted to leave her country occasionally so that she can play in concerts.
As their country falls into disorder, Waldek devises a plan to free Penelope of the regime. He does not, however, let her in on his plans. Organizing for her...
