Chapter 42, Vengeance Shall Be Mine, Says Puss! Summary
Pussy and his mother are on a deserted island. "Wasn't he really an awful person to do what he did?" Eily asks of Father Bernard. "Yes. He was," says Pussy. Pussy's mother says that Pussy must learn to forgive. Routledge and Wallis enter the cell and find Patrick in a fit of rage, screaming, "I'll kill him! I'll kill him! I'll burn his church and him along with it!" Routledge believes the outburst is a result of Patrick's guilt over killing so many people.
Chapter 42, Vengeance Shall Be Mine, Says Puss! Analysis
We again see the theme of forgiveness, as introduced by Patrick's imaginary mother. She asks him to forgive, which he clearly cannot do, yelling, "I'll kill him!"
