Chapter 40, A Lot of People Losing It! Summary
Patrick has been incarcerated for four days, and Detective Routledge is anxious because he can legally hold Patrick for only seven days. Routledge cannot get any coherent confession from Patrick. He wants to go into the cell and 'knock some more sense into his suspect,' but Wallis, his partner, tells him not to. The detective begins to think that he has apprehended the wrong person, and that Patrick really is just a transvestite prostitute.
