Chapter 15, Elephants to England Summary
On the ferryboat ride to England, Patrick meets an ex-boxer named Elephants. Elephants and Patrick drink in the ferry bar, where Elephants eventually falls asleep on a table. Patrick steals some money out of the man's pocket just before the ferry docks in Liverpool.
Patrick recalls how Terence, a resident of Tyreelin, used to comment on Patrick's flagrant cross-dressing and how Father Bernard was tormented by the occasional short story he'd receive in his mailbox.
Chapter 15, Elephants to England Analysis
Patrick shows interest in Elephants because, like Jojo, he is capable of protecting him. As far as a conscience, Patrick appears to have little or none. He does not seem interested in discerning between good and evil; he is a survivalist.
