In chapter 7 of part 2, Cory spends most of one day writing a story for the contest. Cory has trouble picking a subject, but finally decides to write about the dead man in Saxon's Lake. Cory shows the story to his father who is surprised to learn of the figure Cory saw watching them that morning. At first Tom refuses to allow Cory to submit the story, but then changes his mind.
