Point of View
Boyfriend Material is written in the first-person point-of-view following Luc O’Donnell. This is extremely important for establishing the reader’s sympathy for him as Luc’s sarcasm, rash decisions, and harsh words would be very difficult to overcome were the story told from any other perspective. Third-person would create too much distance between the reader and Luc, and any other character would struggle to look past his harsh personality. However, by telling the story through Luc’s point of view, the reader can see how his thoughts contradict his words or actions. They see his extreme self-loathing and what he wishes he could say, as well as the instant regret he feels when he lashes out or insults someone without thinking.
