Importance: This quote establishes a large theme of the novel and represents something that Luc himself must come to understand before his character can grow. While this is said before the reader knows the truth about Miles, the general idea is the same. Everyone makes their own decisions. The suffering they cause to others is a reflection of the person’s own decisions, not of the ones who are hurt by them. However, Luc struggles to believe this due to his relationship and family trauma. This means that he also does not always accept his own decisions and must understand that he is the one responsible for his life, not anyone else.
