Summary
Conley and David became friends, and David eventually raped Conley, forcing Conley to fellate him. For a long time, Conley attempted to repress the memory. Conley narrates some events of their friendship prior to the rape. David was a Pentecostal Christian and invited Conley to come to church with him. Since coming to college, Conley had attempted to focus on literature and forget about religion. However Conley ultimately accepted the invitation. The Pentecostal service was highly energetic and demonstrative. Conley recalls his maternal great-aunt Ellen, whom he had never met, and whom was said to be insane.
