Salford Cemetery, Salford, MA, turn of the twentieth century
Bertha’s new life begins in the Salford Cemetery, where she is found unconscious on the frosty grass. How she is found, seemingly dropped there from the sky, generates intrigue amongst the townspeople. The bowling ball and candlepin she has with her begins Salford’s love affair with Candlepin bowling. The relationships she forges with Joe Wear and Dr. Leviticus Sprague, the two men who find her, are long-lasting. Joe Wear works as the cemetery guard after quitting his job at a bowling alley. Meeting Bertha set him on the track to the rest of his life, at her bowling alley and beyond. Bertha searches for Dr. Sprague at the cemetery, where she finds him on one of his walks. They fall in love and eventually marry.
