Summary
The night of the wager, Joe awoke to Nahum Truitt in his apartment in “Joe Wear Evaporates.” Nahum claimed that Joe needed to be forgiven for his sins and he should travel with him to Maine. Joe refused, and Nahum left that morning. When he returned, he brought Margaret Vanetten, his new wife, to the Alleys. At this point, Joe had already vanished. Part 3 began with “Betrothed and Beholden,” in which Margaret felt alone in the world. She would never be adopted from the nuns, and at 27 years old, she struggled with saying goodbye to Minna. For a year after she left Minna in Canada, Margaret worked and lodged nearby, futilely writing her weekly. Upon returning to Salford, Margaret realized the Octagon had been abandoned, and she took a job as a maid in town. She met Nahum...
