Relationships

One of the primary themes running through the novel is relationships. The novel reveals that even the individuals that make up a family have different relationships among the family members. For example, Ev has a very close relationship with her father. Mackey and his father, on the other hand, seem to be close but in a much different way.

Friendship is another type of relationship the novel tackles. It seems as if Ev loses her best friend, Jules, when Ev moves from Portland to Boston. Because Ev is not embracing her new life, she is also having a hard time making new friends. Ev settles for her friendships with the It Girls, which is superficial, because the girls only want to get information out of Ev about her stepbrother, Ajax.
