Summary
In Chapter 6, although Boulder feels trapped, it seems easier “to put up a façade” than to free herself (87). She guesses she is taking a gamble on her life. She turns further into herself, becoming more estranged from Samsa and Tinna.
The customer returns to the truck. Boulder studies her. To quell her desire, Boulder goes “home early” and starts cooking (88). Making the dough comforts her. However, her desire “cannot be killed” (89).
The customer is “gone for ten days” (89). Boulder cannot stop thinking about her. The days lose definition. In July, she returns. She tells Boulder she was “on vacation” (90). They chat and “make plans to meet for a pint” (90). The customer’s name is Anna. Boulder feels something filling the emptiness inside her.
Boulder gets ready to go out. She tells herself going out with Anna “doesn’t make [her] guilty,” but...
