Summary
In Chapter 2, Boulder and Samsa move into “a small apartment” in Reykjavík (23). Samsa works long days and “makes a lot of money” (23). Although Reykjavík is expensive, she can afford to support both of them. She wants to buy a house, but Boulder is disinterested. She likes the apartment and its proximity to the sea.
Boulder finds a job. Samsa insists she should explore and settle in. The words she uses make Boulder wonder if she has “made a mistake loving her” (24).
Samsa buys a “little yellow house . . . on the outskirts of the city” (24). Boulder thinks such homes “feed off” their inhabitants (25). Samsa rents it to a family.
While Boulder spends most of her time alone, Samsa makes lots of friends. When Boulder joins their get-togethers, she feels stifled by the conversation. She particularly dislikes when they have children around. Boulder hates children...
