Point of View
Most of the stories are written in the past tense and the third person, and all of the stories maintain a consistent adherence to only one character’s perspective. The stories convey the point-of-view characters’ internal lives in addition to their external actions. This access to the characters’ interiority allows the narrative to explore the mental and emotional aspects of the characters’ struggles and flaws. For example, in “Spy vs. Spy,” the reader can understand the dynamics behind Aaron’s antipathy towards George while also understanding the potential mistakes that Aaron is making that exacerbate dysfunction between himself and others. Thus, the reader may gain a wider view of the characters’ own flaws, as the characters themselves have a perspective that is limited to their own immediate desires.
