Summary
In July 1990, Bruce and Patti's son Evan is born. Bruce is thrilled to be a father and is finally able to let go of much of his isolationist tendencies and general melancholy. His new life as a father "revealed that [he] is more than a song." (369) He returns to a previous notion by writing that "work is work ... but life ... is life ... and life trumps art ... always (369).
In Chapter 54, Bruce describes his wife Patti in more detail. He explains that their paths crossed briefly and intermittently for many years in New Jersey before she joined the E Street Band. Like Bruce, Patti is independent and not domestic which makes them a compatible match. Patti is, in Bruce's words, intelligent, exciting, talented, elegant, and dignified.
