Chapter 12

Chapter 12 finds Emma feeling awkward after having sex with Will, but he cannot stop smiling. They leave with Bernie and as they walk to the medical building, they notice that the people they meet on the street all seem dead inside. Will tells Emma how, after their parents died, he allowed himself to be captured so Jake and Anna could escape. Just as Emma is feeling tenderly toward him, she gets the impression that he also had sex with Star. Bernie tells her privately that Will was like a savage when he left the work farm and saved Star’s life. They enter a lab where they get a vaccine for Will and a cure for Star, but Emma is uncomfortable because everything seems too easy. Will begins to get sick from the vaccine, which Bernie says is normal but will last...
