Summary

Chapter 5

In Chapter 5, Emma and Anna walk through an area that is crowded with the infected and Emma again worries that she will get sick. She also thinks about her father’s admonition that “it’s us and them” and realizes that Anna is her “us” now because they have become family. They come upon a couple of female guards and kill them, taking their clothing, which enables them to escape the military patrols and enter an office building, where they free Leo and the other animals being held there for experimentation. As they leave and head into the woods, a golden retriever follows them, running along playfully. Emma feels increasingly sick and eventually passes out. When she awakens, only Leo is there but soon she hears a familiar voice and Anna’s brother Jake arrives and wraps her into a warm embrace...
