Chapter Ten and Chapter Eleven Summary
In Chapter Ten Shannon tries to convince Murphy that she does not want to be courted. They discuss the status of women in their respective societies, Murphy stating that be believes women should have every right that a man has. Shannon points out that she just ended a relationship and does not want to get into another one, and Murphy declares his love for her. Shannon thinks he is being ridiculous and he becomes angry when she looks down on his lifestyle. They calm down and he quotes Shakespeare, and they get caught up in a passionate embrace. Murphy feels familiar to Shannon but she breaks off the kiss, determined to approach their attraction in a practical manner. Murphy claims again that he loves her and will eventually marry her.
