Chapter Eight and Chapter Nine Summary
In Chapter Eight, Shannon borrows the car and goes sightseeing. She contemplates her identity and is given sage encouragement by an old woman she encounters at Moria's Stand, an overlook where a woman had drowned herself years before after her husband and children died. Shannon turns to offer the woman a ride, but she is gone. When Shannon returns to the house she encounters Brianna, who admits their her mother knows nothing about Shannon or Amanda. Brianna feels honor-bound to inform her mother of the situation, even though her parents' marriage was apparently loveless and cold. Shannon does not understand why they stayed together if they were not happy, and Brianna points out that relationships are very different in Ireland than in the USA. Brianna warns Shannon that their mother will try to hurt her...
