Importance: Cohen the Narrator (and, quite reasonably, Cohen the Author) is telling his reader that he is not interested in writing his book using the traditional Jewish structure of continuity. He realizes that is not a true-to-life way of telling a story, and it might seem inauthentic to use that structure while writing a book about what he is doing in his life. This sets the tone for what readers should expect to encounter throughout the rest of Book of Numbers.
