Summary

In "10/17," Cohen the Narrator hears his name being used in reference to coal and sees women who look like Moms while he walks through Vienna. He reflects on how he bankrupted his soul to help Iz and admits to screwing things up with Rach. He assumes it is just coincidental that he has not yet seen Iz and begins making up her brother's life in Vienna with a wife and baby. He also translates his appeal to find Iz to Yasir's office from English to German.

On Principal's birthday, he sees news celebrating Principal. He also sees a news blip in rapid-fire German regarding Balk. The newscaster speaks too quickly for Cohen the Narrator to understand. He goes on, thinking about hoe he wants to apologize to Rach but does not want her talking about him to any journalists.
