Kerewin Holmes
Kerewin is a self-exiled woman who had a quarrel with her family many years prior to the start of the story. She was a painter at one time, but according to her, she has lost the ability to paint. She lives in a self-built Tower, built from some of the proceeds of a large sum of cash won in a lottery. When she first encounters the Gillayleys, she is wary of them as she doesn’t want to be bothered with the outside world. When Joe is sent to prison, she packs her belongings and destroys her Tower to wander again. During this time, she believes she is dying of a mysterious stomach illness and settles into an old hut to die. Miraculously, one day the pain is gone and she is able to move on with her life again.
