Good Against Evil
There is a clear theme of good against evil that is shown in the book. The most immediate place that this theme is shown is in respect to the people of the story and the Lord of the Locusts's servants, including Briar and the rat creatures. The Lord of the Locusts is never given a form but is described in intent and action and is clearly shown as the evil force driving much of what is happening in the story. The Lord of the Locusts was said to have needed a body and so picked the most powerful creature alive, the Queen of the Dragons, Mim. Although she was beloved by the other dragons, she was driven mad by the Lord of the Locusts, and the other dragons were forced to entomb her in rock.
