Lark, Texas, 2016
Lark, Texas, is the primary setting for the events of the novel. A fictional town in the real Shelby County of East Texas, its population numbers just over 100. Central features of the town include Geneva Sweet's Sweets and Jeff's Juice House, a bar owned by Wally Jefferson. Other than the occasional trucker or traveler, the town receives few visitors and contains no local police force. Lark is the location of the murders of Missy Dale and Michael Wright, whose bodies are both found in a nearby bayou. Though small, the town is not unused to violence, having experienced the murders of Joe and Joe, Jr. in 2010 and 2013, respectively. The town is also home to a sizable Aryan Brotherhood presence, who operate largely without fear of retribution due to the complicity of the town's wealthiest denizen, Wally, and the Sheriff, Parker Van Horn.
