Summary

Chapter 26 continues Isaac’s point of view as he recounted the night of Joe Sweet’s murder. He had finished for the night and was eating at the counter while Joe counted money when Wally came in, drunk with a pistol. Wally demanded that Joe sell him the property, which he claimed was rightfully his and given to Geneva only because she slept with his father. The two men began to fight, and Wally shot Joe in the head. He then forced Isaac to lie to the police, telling him to say that three white men had robbed the café. Darren then returned to Geneva’s café and relayed the story to both Randie and Geneva, the latter of whom finally broke down in tears at hearing the truth.
