Summary
Chapter 5 begins Part Two of the novel. In the beginning of the chapter, Darren sat in Geneva’s café, listening to the conversation between Geneva, Huxley, Tim, and the other patrons. A white trucker entered and, growing nervous at the mention of a murder of a white girl, quickly left. Darren, though he did not smoke, grabbed a cigarette from his truck in order to throw off suspicion of loitering and walked around the back of the café to where the sheriff and his deputies examined Missy’s body. The sheriff, unaware that he was a Ranger, asked Darren to step away. Darren met Wendy, who filled him in on the two murders, and soon a white man named Wally approached. The sheriff told everyone that they needed to find Missy’s family in order to positively identify the body, and as everyone...
