Importance: This quote, from very early in the narrative, exemplifies the sort of pun-filled humor that pervades the novel from beginning to end. In this case, the joke is in the term "forethought": given what has gone before, in terms of Kiran's reference to his father's privates (i.e. his penis) and his own, the pun is on the word "foreskin," which male penises have before they are circumcised. On another level, the quote is significant because it is the first point in the book in which the story glances at the relationship between Kiran and his father, a relationship that becomes increasingly significant as the narrative progresses.
