Jody's mother is coming over in a few minutes. Jody realizes that she forgot to call her mother this month because she didn't have a period, her usual reminder to make the call. She and Tommy rush to try to make the apartment presentable, while Jody tells Tommy about her man-hating, righteous mother who disapproves of her "living in sin." When Jody's mother, Francis Evelyn Stroud, arrives, she is cold and disapproving toward her daughter, questioning her and Tommy about their lives and their work.
