Robert is sleeping outside of the bunker because of the heat even though it is December 23rd. At 3 in the morning the bunker is struck by incoming mortars. Robert is hit and blood streams down his right leg, his left leg is on fire with pain and he is missing the ring and little fingers on his right hand. At the battalion aid station he is given morphine and then medevaced to Cu Chi for surgery.
