Summary
After her hands are mangled from torture, Artemisia wraps her hands in bandages. Her young brothers are too ashamed to look at her. During her torture, the judge repeatedly asked her if she was telling the truth, and she always maintained her story was true. Her father cried out as her bones were crushed. She is not sure if she will be able to paint. She walks up to her studio, fighting nausea and exhaustion. She grips her paintbrush and tries to dip it in paint, but drops it. She tries again with the same result. She starts to panic, but then Judith tells her she will find a way to paint again.
In “Broken,” Artemisia’s mother delivers her final story about Susanna. She leaves Daniel and tells Rebecca she has been deemed honest. The elders have been sentenced to death by stoning...
