Dreams
Dreams are an important theme in this story, especially as it relates to the plot involving Woody and his family. Woody's very birth is caused by the fact that Mr. Swopes loses a dream that had been his life for a full decade. Mr. Swopes had planned, worked and cultivated the dream of an orchard producing a fruit called Cherimoya. He'd gone so far as to induce fruit buyers to pledge to purchase the entire crop of his first year. For ten years, he cultivates the land, the seedlings and the buyers and would likely have made an incredible amount of money for his endeavors except for a freak storm that takes the crop and kills most of the trees, meaning Mr. Swopes would have to start over in order to cultivate this dream. He doesn't have the heart to start over and gives up on the dream...
