Summary
In “Office Hours,” Marie used to spend time with the Professor in his office in Godspeed Hall. The Professor taught film courses at the University. He was Marie’s mentor, but he also let her smoke and nap in his office. Although the office was drafty, Marie welcomed it, because she had neither sofa nor bed “in her apartment” (139). Her parents “had remortgaged their house” to pay for her tuition, and she did not want to ask for money (139).
The last time Marie saw the Professor, she was leaving a campus party shortly before graduation. She encountered him walking his dog on campus. They talked briefly about Marie’s plans for the future.
