In this poem, Clifton expresses what perhaps most women and girls have thought, that men should have to experience the frustration and pain that goes along with menstruation. She wants men to know what it's like to have cramps, to be in a strange town without tampons and with no store in sight to buy some. She wants them to know what it's like to have your period come early and be wearing a white skirt. She wants them to know the fear of having the period be a week late. Then in stanza three, she wishes for men to know what menopausal symptoms are like, including hot flashes, coming just when you meet someone special, and terrible huge clots that come without warning or pattern.
