New York City is the main setting for “Bleeding Edge” by Thomas Pynchon. New York City is the massive port city in New York State where Maxine lives and works, and where the vast majority of the characters in the novel live and work in some capacity or another. New York is home to Silicon Alley, the counterpart of California’s Silicon Valley, and is where hashslingrz is operated by Gabriel Ice. New York is also the area of operation for Nicholas Windust, the Russian mafia, and is targeted by Islamic terrorists on September 11, 2001. New York is also the subject of countless conspiracy theories and explanations for the terrorist attacks in the novel. Some, like March, believe the government is to blame, while others, like Brooke, argue the government had nothing at all to do with the attacks.
