Summary

Chapter 37 – Maxine goes to meet Nick Windust in his Hell’s Kitchen safehouse apartment, but discovers he has been killed. He has no ID, wallet, phone, or anything personal on him. The phone rings and goes to the answering machine. A voice tells Maxine “they” know she is there, that it is a school night, and that she’ll never know when her kids might need her. Maxine hopes it isn’t an actual promise or threat, but that she is merely being warned. At home, Horst realizes something has deeply troubled Maxine. Maxine tells him nothing is wrong. Maxine has a conversation with her father, where her father relates the internet was originally a military network designed to ensure survival and communication in the event of nuclear war. Although opened up to civilians, Maxine’s father contends the internet is still about control...
