Shepherd's Corner
Shepherd's Corner is located in Virginia, and is the novel's primary overarching setting. Beauregard grows up here with his parents. After his release from juvie, he returns to the town, feeling he has no other options. He marries Kia, and starts a family. Shortly thereafter, he and his cousin Kelvin open an auto repair shop in town. Everything in Shepherd's Corner is dully pleasant for a while. However, Beauregard feels trapped by the plaguing familiarity of the place, by the ghosts it holds. He later thinks that leaving town will ultimately save his family, but Kia encourages him to stay and change.
