Summary
In Chapter 1, Beauregard drove his father's Duster in a street race. Short on rent, he hoped winning the race would help with money. Montage Motors, the garage he and his cousin Kelvin owned, had not been doing well. Beauregard contemplated how his hometown, Shepherd's Corner, had changed. After the race, his competitor, Warren, accused him of cheating. Two men appeared, claiming to be cops and demanding Beauregard's paperwork. Afterwards, Beauregard told Kelvin the cops were fake. Furious that Warren was scamming him, Beauregard confronted him.
In Chapter 2, Beauregard and Kelvin returned to the garage and discussed money. Their business had been suffering since another garage, Precision, opened. Beauregard announced his plan to talk to Boonie about a job. He had been trying not to return to illegal work, but could not get "another extension" on the garage loan and was feeling desperate (19).
