Good versus Evil

The primary plot throughout the entire novel is that of good versus evil. Each of the characters experiences an inner struggle with good versus evil. For example, Claudia struggles with the evil things her husband did that landed him in jail. While she doesn't think of Roger as an evil person, she wishes to hide her relation to him so that the villagers in the countryside do not equate Claudia with his evil doing.

When Julia and Peter find out Claudia's true identity, they struggle with whether Claudia is a good person or an evil one. When Claudia donates goods out of her garage to the church project, Julia hesitates in taking them. Julia is worried that the items might be stolen or bought from the bad deeds in which Claudia's husband had partaken.
