Chapter 6 Summary

Peter Durnford is annoyed that Anthony Brewer has been invited to dinner. Peter thinks Anthony is a threat to Peter's claim on Claudia. Peter prepares for the dinner party by picking out a tie from his extensive collection. Peter's cat gets into the trash and drags out pieces of fish, so Claudia calls for Peter to get her a drink, while she kicks the cat out the back door. Victoria, Peter and Julia's daughter, dreams of talking with Anthony Brewer when he comes for dinner.

The dinner party commences at about 8:15. Anthony Brewer is the last to arrive. Julia questions Claudia about her new job. Claudia mentions that she's taking the following week off because Lila, her daughter, is coming for a visit from New York. Claudia asks about the girl riding the black and white horse.
