What is the difference between liberalism and leftism?
Owens makes an important distinction between liberalism and leftism at the beginning of Blackout, and this understanding drives many of her critiques of the Democratic party through the book. Liberalism, she defines, is "a political philosophy based on liberty and equality before the law" (37). Moreover, liberalism, she argues, has only ever been practiced by conservatives, the party usually represented as being the party of "law and order." Alternatively, leftism, she defines, is "any political philosophy that seeks to infringe upon individual liberties in its demand for a higher moral good" (37). This argument proves essential to understanding the flaws of the Democratic party: morality is subjective, so therefore imposing a higher moral good inevitably infringes upon individual beliefs and value systems.
