Summary
As conservatism has begun to spread in the West, Owens remarks that media voices and journalists are fearful of “ceding influence to independent voices” (42). Conservatives have turned to social media as a way to make their voices heard amidst the mainstream networks. Ironically, Owens points out, there were no claims of “internet radicalization” until Trump was voted into office (43). Owens herself used the internet as a way to learn about the distortions of the media. She searched YouTube for “black conservatives” and came across a clip of Larry Elder in which he annihilates the narrative that police brutality is inherently connected to racism.
