Chapter 46 Summary

Skipping from character to character, Chapter 46 updates for the reader some of the key players. In the ocean, preparations are successfully completed, and the rocket is ready to launch its deadly payload. On the mainland, Rudi Gunn directs his NUMA ships to support the Coast Guard and Navy in protecting American soil. Dirk Pitt, Jr. and Summer fly to San Diego, where they join the Deep Endeavor to start patrolling the waters and assisting the Coast Guard. Here, they learn that they can only patrol up to 12 miles out into the ocean and that they will be boarding incoming ships with bomb sniffing dogs. They also find a new, smaller vessel, called the Badger, which is an unusual submersible vehicle designed to drill out core samples but can travel quite quickly through the water.
