Chapter 7 Summary
This chapter opens with a brief glimpse back into the life of Irv Fowler, who was a scientist from the beginning of the book, saved by Dirk Pitt, Jr. from the Aleutian Island poisoning. In just a couple of short paragraphs, he wakes up with a terrible headache, has to leave work early, and tries unsuccessfully to rest. A glance in the mirror shows that he is developing a rash. In Tokyo, the US embassy's deputy chief of Mission, Robert Bridges, is attending a function on Japanese trade. He excuses himself to go to the washroom and is accompanied by a security guard. The guard inspects the bathroom, determines that the only other person in the washroom (a hotel staffer) is not a threat, and allows the deputy ambassador to use the washroom.
