Summary
In Chapter 10, Harper arrives in Jakarta. He spends a few months getting to know the area and the language and meets Benni. He spends time watching people in bars, listening to the foreign press. Harper moves around. Demonstrations are taking place throughout the country. He waits for phone calls for further instructions, but does not get one. The Communist takeover is halted. When he calls the Institute, he is told to stay put. The Institute wants an economic analysis as the region stabilizes.
He meets Johnson, who gives Harper his next assignment. Johnson tells him about Pak Parno, a well-connected man that the Institute wants Harper to befriend. Harper meets Parno and his wife. He speaks with Parno about a list of names. Parno wants to know how many names there are and Harper indicated 800. Harper explains that he will bring the list...
