Summary
Chapter 16 starts with a Teek saying that someone who is impressed will expect that every day.
Xiala charts the ship's course at the early dawn toward the Tovasheh. The crew is optimistic but does not seem to notice the giant crow that is always around Serapio. However, despite his nightmarish appearance, Xiala sees Serapio as an eager young man that others misunderstand. Her plan to integrate him into the crew, however, fails. When he steps onto the ship, a violent breeze causes water to knock into the ship and Xiala is shocked by the carvings on his body. Look calls Serapio Odo Sedoh, or the grandfather crow, and says this is a sign that they are blessed by a god. Others disagree, but Xiala gets them to row again.
She apologizes to Serapio, relieved that Loob knew the markings. However, Xiala is surprised...
