Summary
In “Funeral Games,” the women watch Hectors body dragged from the high gate and cry. Andromache is distressed, knowing Hector will not pass to the realm of Hades without a proper burial, his soul doomed to wander.
That night, the ghost of Patroclus visits Achilles, as Patroclus was not yet buried, and tells Achilles he is wandering outside Hades. In the morning, Achilles burns his body and buries his ashes.
Achilles then hosts funeral games, as is custom, and provides prizes. The warriors have a chariot race, boxing match, wrestling, footrace, and spear fight.
For the next 12 nights, Achilles does not sleep, instead taking his chariot and riding in circles around Patroclus’s grave. Apollo wraps Hector’s body in protection from dragging damage. The Gods find Achilles’s behavior dishonorable.
