“Pioneers Awake!” bulletin

This bulletin symbolizes the propaganda prevalent during the socialist revolution. The children are forced to read it in order to try and control and brainwash them. It quotes the President of the Revolution’s speeches and purports the evils of religion.

Planes represent an escape from the orphanage to Bonaventure Kokolo. Every time that a plane flies over, he hopes that it is his wealthy father coming to rescue him.

The director of the orphanage symbolizes an abusive father figure. He is cruel to the children, punishing them harshly and showing no love or affection. He states his dislike of children prior to getting his position but takes it anyway in order to further his career.
